Since I was raised in a conservative family I was doubtful about hypnosis. Yet, I knew that my doubt was mostly a false notion. Usually people are scared from things they don’t know or don’t understand, and even well-educated people are the same. When I thought about giving up smoking, I imagined that was the right time to try out hypnosis. Trying hypnosis as a method of giving up smoking wasn’t going to cost me anything. In addition, it helps getting rid of addiction with little work. There is nothing to lose; I can always try something else in case it didn’t work out with me.
The good thing about hypnosis as a method for quitting smoking or any kind of addiction is that people believe in it. Being hypnotized does not stop your body from being physically hungry to nicotine, and it won’t make you stop smoking. The main idea is that when you are hypnotized, you will think that it’s not you. If the hypnotist tells you that you no longer like to smoke, you will unconsciously choose to continue with what he’s saying rather than being against him/her.
The hypnotist explains all of this. Hypnosis is almost unreal, it just puts people at ease and it is effective because people are superstitious at their belief in its power. By giving an explanation to his patient the hypnotist is able to establish a cooperative relationship that helps him a lot and makes his patient feel comfortable with him.
Some people assume that when hypnotized, you will forget what happened, while in fact this is not the case. It all starts when the hypnotist starts making you feel sleepy. You won’t be able to open your eyes, but you won’t be asleep, yet you won’t feel like moving. I remember his suggestions to give up smoking. Yet even though I remembered it, it still worked on me. Since then, I have not craved another cigarette. I am not sure if it works with everyone, but it certainly worked well for me. If you want to give up smoking hypnosis is a method worth trying.
