Giving Up Smoking Requires Assistance
When I was a teenager I started to smoke and I had tried different cigarette types by the end of my high school years. At the beginning of my college years, I did not get used to smoking, till I reached my second year when I started to smoke again and become a regular smoker. So many times I needed someone to give me an advice or help me give up smoking, but I never found that till I became a former smoker.
I only got internal assistance from myself to give up smoking! This was the fear of heart disease, cancer, and imminent death. I had this fear because many members of my family used to suffer from the previously mentioned diseases due to smoking. For example, my maternal grandfather who kept smoking for sixty-five years of his life. He lived till up to his early 80s. However, he spent the last six months of his life in the hospital suffering from lung cancer that eventually lead to his death. This incident acted as powerful support for me to give up smoking than for any other person.
After a few years, my father experienced another smoking impact disease. He couldn’t live long to die by cancer. Instead, he got a heart attack that killed him instantly. That was the same cause for my father’s father death. The two of them were smokers for most of their lives. At the age of fifteen my dad started smoking and kept up the habit up till his late 50’s. For the first twenty years he smoked cigarettes and then he turned to cigars in the late 1970s. By 1991 he gave up smoking after he had a bout with pneumonia, but by that time the damage had already taken place and by the age of 60 only 40% of his heart was functioning. This was because cholesterol and fatty deposits resulting from smoking had littered his veins.
